How Science Teacher Leaders Enhance and Facilitate Lesson Study
Max Longhurst’s presentation at the 2025 WALS Conference in Hiroshima explores how rural science educators can overcome professional isolation through Technology-Mediated Lesson Study (TMLS)—a collaborative model that connects teachers across distances using digital tools.
In traditional lesson study, expert facilitators guide teachers through cycles of planning, teaching, and reflection. TMLS reimagines this process by embedding Science Teacher Leaders (STLs)—experienced educators who serve as both facilitators and peers. These practitioner-leaders help foster trust, deepen instructional conversations, and build cohesive, collaborative groups.
The presentation highlights how rural teachers, often the only science educator in their school, can still engage in meaningful professional learning. By positioning all participants as knowledgeable content experts, TMLS encourages shared ownership and innovation. Teachers report stronger connections, richer dialogue, and a renewed sense of professional community—even across geographic boundaries.
This session will share real-world examples, teacher reflections, and research insights into how TMLS supports sustainable, high-quality professional development in underserved areas.
