Evaluating Technology-Mediated Lesson Study with Rural Science Teachers

Rural educators often have fewer professional development opportunities than their urban counterparts, particularly in science education. This challenge is especially evident in training for designing and implementing lessons that align with new science standards requiring three-dimensional teaching.
This research examines technology-mediated lesson study (TMLS) as a professional development model for small groups of rural science teachers. Through TMLS, educators collaborate on lesson design, observe each other teach using technology, and refine instructional strategies to enhance student learning.

Findings indicate that teachers responded positively to TMLS, highlighting key benefits such as collaborative lesson planning, virtual classroom observations, and co-designing lessons. These results demonstrate how TMLS supports professional growth and fosters strong professional networks among rural science teachers, ultimately improving science education in remote communities.
